Don't Burn Those Bridges

don't burn your bridges Far too often I hear or read in forums about expats burning their bridges. Maybe that's okay for an expat without family, who for some reason has become estranged from friends, and has nothing or no one to connect him/her with home.

Oddly enough, many of those expats really haven't lived in Thailand long enough to be sure they are here for the long run. When times get tough emotionally and spiritually, a connection to home can sure make a difference.

For most of us, it's something to think seriously about avoiding. Keeping your support network in place makes good sense.

Most family and friends naturally worry about your life in the wilds of this foreign and mysterious land. So staying in touch on a regular basis alleviates concern as well.

Staying in Touch With Home

If friends are internet savvy, that makes things easier. Besides email, consider other forms of contact as well as social media.
  • Email is an obvious choice.
  • Yahoo! Voice has a a pay as you go system that connects to the U.S. at $0.01/min (U.K. at $0.017) and no connection fee. Some of the geeks in Thailand claim it is superior to Skype. Yahoo! Voice.
  • Skype™ works wonders to bring friends and family closer. Urge them to download and learn to Skype. It's free.
  • Googlevoice and video chat even connects a face to the voice.
  • Facebook™ Set up a private Facebook group that only allows member you approve to join. It's a great way to post photos of growing kids as well as sights of your new home. Set up a separate account for kids to keep in touch with their friends. Facebook is free as well.
One thing to keep in mind. You never know when profession, politics, health or finances will make you want to or need to return home.
