Thailand for Travelers

While tourists may find some good information in these pages, they are primarily written with the long term traveler or expat in mind.

The generally accepted definition of a traveler is one who places more importance on the journey than on arrival. That understood, Thailand is possibly the easiest exotic destination that westerners can choose for their travels. Getting there may take many hours in the big bird, but the rewards can be spectacular. “Can be” is the operative phrase.

Hotels, resorts, guest houses and rentals vary from downright cheap to extremely reasonable. Thai cuisine has a worldwide reputation. Thai hospitality is legendary. Enough English is spoken here to allow almost anyone to get by. And Thailand is one of the safest places on earth .. even considering the issues in Southern Thailand.

Thailand might be considered a gem with many facets and a number of flaws. Depending on which facet you look at, and how closely, and your definitions, you may see beauty or you may see ugliness. Much depends on you.

Many travelers seek out fine sand beaches to relax in the sun and play in the sea. Others head for the mountains to trek among the hill tribes. You can afford to play golf and actually have a caddy. Rock climbing above a white sand beach may top your list.

Too many opt for the hedonistic nightlife of a few tourist centers and completely miss out on what Thailand truly is. But that’s part of Thailand and .. “Up to you.”

Cultural attractions and experiences should be your most memorable experiences.

• Spending quality time away from normal tourist destinations
• Interacting with the Thai people in their day-to-day environment
• Sipping Oolong tea in a roadside stand in the Chinese community of Doi Mae Salong
• Wandering among the ruins and remains of historical parks such as Ayuttaya, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet and Pimai
• Trekking the mountains - visiting Akha, Karen and Lisu and hill tribe villages
• Taking quiet time in Buddhist temples and forest monasteries
